Apple launched a service program in October 2020 to fix issues with AirPods Pro that could cause static, crackling sounds, or problems with Active Noise Cancellation. Apple stated at the time that the program will cover the AirPods Pro for two years after retail purchase.
Apple discreetly updated the associated support document at the beginning of October to prolong the program. According to Reddit, the page’s “Additional Information” section now states that the program would cover affected AirPods Pro for three years following the unit’s first retail sale, up from the previous two years.
The following are symptoms of faulty AirPods Pro that need to be repaired:
- Crackling or static sounds that increase in loud environments, with exercise or while talking on the phone
- Active Noise Cancellation not working as expected, such as a loss of bass sound, or an increase in background sounds, such as street or airplane noise
Affected AirPods were made before October 2020, and those who are having problems with their AirPods Pro can bring them to Apple or an Apple Authorized Servicing Provider for free service. The AirPods Pro will be evaluated prior to servicing to ensure that they are qualified for the program, according to Apple. AirPods Pro earphones (left, right, or both) that show signs of the problem will be replaced.
Only the AirPods Pro are eligible for the program; the AirPods and AirPods Max are not.
